Food Forest Landscaping

Food Forest landscaping grows food from below ground, veggies to top canopy fruit and nut bearing trees. Cultivating mushrooms is also a food forest asset.

Food Forest - The Seven Layer Forest

The food forest permaculture garden can be one of the densest and highest production methods used for limited spaces. A practical way of thinking in limited urban spaces. May I add an eighth layer? Mushroom cultivation!

Temperature and Moisture regulation for increased fertility and bioremediation

Forests are dominated by fungal organisms in the soil with the ability to make rhizomorphs (superhighways) with the potential to transfer information, nutrients and enzymes able to remediate soils, and add to soil fertility. Mycelium which is the body of the fungus thickens to a stage called rhizomorphs where nutrients and information is able to travel long distances. Urban soils have pollutants that can be organized and dealt with by specific fungal organisms, such as Agaricus bitorquis(pavement mushroom) or the more common Pleurotus sp. (Oyster mushrooms) using enzymes and chelating agents! The orange one below is likely phanerochaete  sanguinea.

Inoculation

Desirable edible mushrooms are inoculated such as Blewit, wine-cap, shaggy manes, pavement mushroom, deer mushroom, morels, comb's tooth. We cultivate other wild mushrooms too like the dryads saddle below!
